Title supplied by cataloger. A large crowd of bathers enjoy the water or lounge on the sand under umbrellas while enjoying a day of leisure at the Joy Zone at Seal Beach. On the right is the Derby Racer roller coaster which was built adjacent to the first Seal Beach pier, a wooden affair advertised as the longest pier south of San Francisco. The Derby was built for the San Francisco Exposition, then taken apart, shipped to Seal Beach and reassembled. It was two blocks long, towered over all buildings and whisked riders around the tracks at high speeds. Seal Beach's bubble burst with the 1929 stock market crash and the onset of the Great Depression. The Joy Zone shriveled, the roller coaster burned down, and many of the buildings fell into disrepair.
