Description
Anthony Slide discusses his book, “American Racist.” He begins by explaining that his book chronicles the life and films of Thomas Dixon. He discusses how being born during the reconstruction period in the South shaped Dixon’s attitude and beliefs about the Civil War and race. Slide then goes into Dixon’s authorship of “The Clansman” and work as a preacher, novelist, dramatist, and eventually in film. He explains that Dixon wrote “The Clansman” as a response to seeing “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” on stage, which he felt only represented the North’s view on slavery and the Civil War. Slide goes on to share how Dixon joined with director D.W. Griffith to adapt “The Clansman” into the film “A Birth of a Nation.” Later in the interview he shares how he became interested in the history of film.
