Photograph caption dated April 20, 1956 reads, "Northrop Scorpion F-89D all-weather interceptors line up at Palmdale Airport. Ideal flying weather attracted aircraft industry to Edwards Air Force Base, flight test center for supersonic jets and guided missiles, and Palmdale Airport, an Air Force-owned field used jointly by Northrop, Lockheed and Convair. Industry accounted for $39,000,000 payroll last year.
