Description
In response to the spread of organized anti-Semitism in the United States during the 1930s, leaders of Los Angeles' Jewish community formed a special defense organization known as the Los Angeles Jewish Community Committee. The committee later changed its name to the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles, Community Relations Committee. The collection documents the committee's efforts to combat prejudice and educate the public through cooperation with both Jewish and non-Jewish groups, from its formation in 1933 through the early 1990s. This is a display montage, created by the Los Angeles Jewish Community Council, of various propaganda materials. It contains both anti-semitic propaganda and the materials created by the LAJCC to fight that propaganda. Included are samples of newspapers, newsletters, and brochures such as The Cross and the Flag; America Speaks; The W. Lee O'Daniel News; They Got the Blame; and Probing our Prejudices. Also included are several photographs and political cartoons. Many of the anti-Semitic materials were collected by members of the LAJCC who were "plants" within the fascist organizations in Los Angeles; infiltration, surveillance, documentation and exposure were the main tools utilized by the LAJCC in its fight against pro-Nazi and anti-Semitic groups. 8 x 10 in.
