The Googie coffee shop (upper center) was one of the structures later demolished to make way for the headquarters for the Southern California Gas Company. Photograph caption dated July 31, 1980 reads, "Five taxis parked in front of the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles yesterday were in the path of a flat-bed truck, loaded with 23,000 pounds of steel rods, when it lost its brakes at Fourth Street. The truck careened backward down Olive Street, wreaking injuries and havoc as it gathered speed up to 40 miles an hour. Before it stopped by crashing into a wall at Pershing Square and dumping its load, the truck raced along the sidewalk, leveling utility poles and street signs and injuring three pedestrians waiting at a bus stop. Driver Ken Bush suffered minor injuries."
