Featured on page 23 of Connie Young Yu's "Chinatown, San Jose, U.S.A." with caption: San Jose resident William Vinton testifying in 1877 against the Chinese at the Joint Committee of the Two Houses of Congress on Chinese Immigration, stated: "Chinatown ocupies about a block...almost in the center of the town of San Jose. Its average population is about 1,000." Furthermore Vinton testified that on weekends a large number of Chinese employed on strawberry farms in Alviso came to Chinatown to "spend their time and money and Sunday."
