Title supplied by cataloger. Santa Catalina Island (also known as Catalina Island, or just Catalina), is a rocky island off the coast of California, located about 22 miles south-southwest of Los Angeles. The island is 22 miles long and eight miles across, and has a total population of 3,696 persons, with 85% living in its only city of Avalon, and approximately 298 others living in the second, much smaller resort village, called Two Harbors. Two Harbors is located at the isthmus of the island, north of Avalon, and is the primary landing spot for those who wish to tour the western half of the island. The Isthmus of Santa Catalina is a 770-meter section of land that joins the northwestern portion of Santa Catalina Island to the main part of the island. Part of the isthmus is occupied by the town of Two Harbors, named for two harbors on either side of the isthmus: Isthmus Cove and Catalina Harbor. Two Harbors lies on the leeward side facing Isthmus Cove. In the 1860s, a small garrison of Union troops were stationed at the Isthmus on the island's west end for about nine months following the island's brief goldrush experience. Their barracks stand as the oldest structure on the island and is currently home of the Isthmus Yacht Club. Santa Catalina Island is visited by about a million tourists each year. Two women can be seen overlooking the bay at the Isthmus of Santa Catalina. A large ship and numerous boats riddle the bay and a cluster of small structures, possibly huts, are visible on the beach. Tropical palms, a sandy beach, and smooth crystal clear waters are reminiscent of many South Sea tropical islands, making this a heavenly paradise on California's own doorstep.
