Photograph article dated January 5, 1950 partially reads, "It's a mountain of white gold! And engineers and geologists say there are 22 1/2 million tons of it in sight - enough for the next 100 years. It was laid down by Mother Nature as an oyster bed thousands - maybe a million years ago - when the waters of the seas covered the area, now miles from the ocean. Moreover, there is only one other mountain like it now known in the world. That one is in England. This briefly describes the mountain of fossilized oyster shells which lies eight miles from Santa Susana in the beautiful rolling hills surrounding Simi Valley." Tom and Bob Rohrer examine formations for fossils at an oyster shell mine just beyond the Santa Susana pass.; See image #00134235 for additional photo in this series.
