Description
EPH's essay on the 200-inch telescope gives an overview history of telescopes in general, and then describes three particular problems for which the new telescope will be used to try to answer: "the canals on Mars, the relative abundance of chemical elements in stars, and the nature of the red shift." He addresses these examples because they highlight three of the increased capabilities of the new telescope: resolution, dispersion, and penetration. Alexander F. Morrison Lecture, Pasadena, Calif., Apr. 8, 1947; published in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, Vol. 59, No. 349, Aug. 1947, p. 153-167.
