Description
"Modern needlework" piece from the 1980s. The style of creating "fence" or chained "x" motifs out of stitches and embroidery between the center of a design and the border became a popular stylistic choice from ca. 1980-ca. 2000. The design adds to the concept of "borders" or "thaiv ntug," which means to "cover up with a border," and is meant to seal in the protective qualities of the inner motifs and offer safety and security for the wearer or bearer of the textile. The triangular designs in black, green, yellow, and white serve as "mountain" borders. The inner motifs depict a "double snail" shaped "dragon's tail" and "pumpkin flowers" also known simply as "diamond" motifs. Typed label affixed to mat board beneath photograph reads, "Detail of modern needlework piece. / Lou Her, Rancho Cordova, 1983. / (Lug Hawj)." Handwriting to the right of label reads, "1983 / Lewis."
Notes on verso read: ""LFC [handwritten orange ink, upper left verso]; Detail appliqué Lou Her, Rancho 1983 [handwritten red ink, upper left verso]; HMong: appliqué detail (Lou Her) Lewis Judy, *HMO.3520.00* Summer 2006 [printed label, upper left verso]""
