Kathleen Sheldon Collection;On June 1, 1994, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landing at Normandy, the French Consulate in Los Angeles organized a reenactment of the historic battle on the beach in Santa Monica. The event was supported by boats, ships, and vintage fighter planes. Veterans, re-enactors, active duty soldiers and Marines staged the landing as a crowd of a few thousand watched from the sand.;In the late 1930s, the U.S. military began developing small boats that could carry troops from ships to open beaches. Andrew Jackson Higgins of New Orleans adapted his Eureka Boat to meet the military's specifications for a landing craft. The boat seen in the image is a Higgins Boat.
