Description
Posing outside the Grand Century Mall are shoppers Loan Ho, Huong Ho, C. Nguyen, J. Phan, and S. Phan. The Mall opened in early 2000 and contains almost one hundred stores and restaurants that cater to the large Vietnamese and Asian populations in San José. The Grand Century Mall is well-known and frequently draws visitors from Los Angeles, Washington state, and even Hong Kong. The term "mall" comes from the British game of pall-mall or "ball and mallet," a combination of crochet and golf that was played on a wide fairway green. The first shopping center to be referred to as a "mall" was the Northgate in Seattle, Washington, which opened in 1950 and boasted 800,000 square feet of stores arranged in a linear pattern along a 44 foot wide pedestrian walkway or "mall." This design soon became the central feature of countless shopping facilities. Shopping mall popularity and notoriety hit a peak in the early 1980s with movies like Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Frank Zappa's song Valley Girl. The 1990s saw the evolution of shopping malls as entertainment centers that include multiplex theatres, arcades, and restaurants. At the turn of the 21st century, Factory Outlet centers are the fastest growing segment of the shopping center industry.
