Description
This 1950 view of the south side of K Street reveals Grayson's Department Store at 716 K St. and Payless Drugstore at 716 K St. Established in the summer of 1940, Grayson's was a California chain, specializing in women's apparel. The company spent $50,000 to ensure that the Sacramento store had air conditioning, rotating displays and fluorescent lighting. Due to sagging wages, employees at the store went on strike in the summer of 1960. By the start of fall, both sides had settled, with weekly wages being raised by five dollars.
