Description
Army major and right-wing politician Roberto D'Aubuisson poses for a photograph with three young supporters during a campaign event at ARENA headquarters in San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador. All three young women wear the party's colors, red, white, and blue. In 1981, major Roberto D'Aubuisson founded ARENA as an extreme right-wing political party. In 1993 the United Nations Truth Commission for El Salvador established that D'Aubuisson gave the order to assassinate Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero and human rights campaigner. The extreme-right Salvadoran soldier was also a leader of the death squads put in place to eliminate leftist opposition. Richard Cross took this image in 1982 while covering the presidential election and War of Liberation in El Salvador.
