Description
The unedited transcript of Phalana Tiller's interviews with Roger Martin and James Quigley for the May 2011 episode of Drucker on the Dial entitled "Design Thinking, Collective Action and Peter Drucker." First, Roger Martin, dean of the Rotman School of Management, discusses his older book entitled The Design of Business: Why Design Thinking is the Next Competitive Advantage. He talks about the need to think about the customer first, and not from a producer standpoint. Martin describes his work with A. G. Lafley, of Procter & Gamble, and the company's pursuit to become a more design oriented company. He explains design thinking, and says it is a prerequisite for innovation, and the creation of new ideas. He then talks about his new book entitled Fixing the Game: Bubbles, Crashes, and What Capitalism Can Learn from the NFL. Martin goes on to praise the NFL (National Football League) for its laser-like focus on the fan and the fan experience. Next, James Quigley, global chief executive officer of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, discusses his book entitled As One, which looks at how a leader can bring a large group together to effectively accomplish some common goal. He talks about the work of John Chambers of Cisco Systems, and the company’s innovation process. Quigley says that he has used the “as one” diagnostic at Deloitte in order to more effectively implement its strategy. He explains that he likes to lead with the power of ideas, put forward bold and ambitious plans, and then empower his team members to use their skills and abilities to work towards goals and objectives. Quigley goes on to talk about the research behind his book.
