Description
Three courtly young women are shown creating bonseki. A young girl in a red kimono, her hair tied up in two loops, kneels on the left watching the other two. A second woman, in a dark blue kimono decorated with red, purple and yellow flowers and a red under kimono with a padded hem, stands to the left talking with a third woman kneeling in the middle. She is dressed in a paler blue kimono and is kneeling before a work mat on which rests a black tray with white sand strewn across it. To her right lies a packet of feathers for manipulating the sand and to her left a set of small boxes or sieves. A small chest with drawers sits off the mat in front of her. Behind her on a low table sits a completed bonseki, a dry landscape with stones representing mountains and white sand on the black tray.
