Photograph caption dated November 13, 1935 reads, "Opening its seventeenth season, the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra will appear in concert tomorrow night at the Philharmonic auditorium under the direction of M. Pierre Monteux of France, as guest conductor. Photo shows the orchestra in rehearsal." A second caption dated 1950 reads, "Eyes - and ears - of the musical world turn today to Philharmonic Auditorium where members of Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, defying superstition, will play Tschaikovski's [sic] "death symphony," - the "Pathetique." Three musicians have reportedly died after performances of the work. But Maestro Arthur Rodzinski and members of local orchestra will play it not only tonight but also tomorrow afternoon."
