Description
Two armed guards are posted in front of the gates of Presidential Candidate Ángel Aníbal Guevara headquarters in Guatemala City. They are both armed with M1 carbines of U.S. origin. A sign posted on the gate reads, "Vehicles are prohibited to enter." A banner posted on the building reads, "Peace, Bread, and Jobs." On March 8, 1982 Guevara won the presidential election although electoral fraud was claimed by other parties. A military coup prevented Guevara from assuming power and installed a three-man junta headed by General Efraín Ríos Montt.
