Photograph article dated September 9, 1961 partially reads, "Solvang translated means 'sunny field' in Danish. It also means a quaint, quiet town of some 950 persons centered in the Santa Ynez Valley 40 miles northwest of Santa Barbara - an interesting day's journey from the Valley taking you from the beaches of U.S. Hwy. 101 past Ventura to mountain passes skirting high Lake Cachuma... Solvang's history began in 1910, founded by three Danish educators from Des Moines, Iowa, who sought adequate climate, water supply and fertility of soil to build a college, known as Atterdag."
