Description
This video is important to the influential activist politics of California's diverse socio-economic system. John Malpeda (California-based Interdisciplinary Artist-in-Residence during Summer 1997) is the founding Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD). Founded in Los Angeles' Skid Row in 1985, the LAPD is the first performance group in the nation comprised primarily of homeless and formerly homeless people. John used his residency at the Marin Headlands to organize and further develop his writings on teaching performance and building community-based organizations, conduct additional research on current economic and social trends in California, and develop new work. His residency performances, Call Home, and How Many Voices? Market Myth and Reality, were themed on creative activists and artists utilizing devices of mass culture to empower individuals and let new voices, especially those on the economic margins, be heard. Los Angeles Poverty Department is a supplement to Call Home created by John Malpede. It pictures the actors Betsy Houlton, Akilah Nayo Oliver, Fred Warren, and James White in 1992 as they were in their performance at the Headlands Center for the Arts.
