Photograph of a drawing depicting a skull set into a tree with a cowboy in the background, ca.1860. The cow skull is hung from a tree in the foreground at left by straps attached to the horns. A mounted cowboy can be seen gesturing towards the skull at right, while another rider can be seen in the distance at right. Below the skull at left, a small herd of cattle is grazing. According to the picture file card, a skull set into a tree was a common marker for a rancho boundary.
