Photograph of a section of the Los Angeles Star newspaper showing advertising overland mail, October 16, 1858. The ad reads as follows: "Los Angeles Star. Saturday, October 16, 1858. By the overland mail through in 20 days!! Ten days later!! Dates from New York to the 15th and St. Louis to the 20th of September. By the arrival here of the Overland Mail stage on Tuesday, we were put in possession of New York and St. Louis papers of the above dates. The mail came through to this point, from St. Louis, in twenty days, including a stoppage of thirty-seven and a half hours at Forth Smith, waiting for the Memphis mail. This fact shows how thoroughly and completely the road has been stocked, and how well organized the whole system has been, from the very outset. The passengers found everything ready at the stations, and no delay occurred, nor hurrying on to make up for lost time. It is the opinion of all who have come over the road, that the journey will yet be made to San Francisco in twenty days. From the New York Herald of the 15th ult. We obtain the following Intelligence: The Incendiation at the Quarentine Station. The last mail brought us the intelligence of the total destruction of the Quarentine establishment at State Island, by the mob. This was brought [...]".
