This is an audio recording of the third in a series of lectures by Peter Drucker, given on November 7, 1989. The topic is the job duties and job rights of knowledge workers. Drucker begins with a warning that his talk may annoy some people because he is going to say things they do not want to hear. He discusses how recently there have been a lot more cases of people suing for unlawful dismissal from jobs, and that the employers always lose, even when they settle out of court. He agrees that it is important for jobs to be protected, but cautions that we have to be careful not to go too far and become trapped like with academic tenure. Drucker also goes on to say that where there are rights, there have to be responsibilities. A knowledge worker’s job duties should include having performance standards and taking responsibility for self improvement as a professional in a specific knowledge area. He also says that there are three common misconceptions by personnel management in regards to knowledge workers. Drucker lists these as a fair days work for a fair days pay, only blue collar industrial workers need to be managed, and there is one personnel policy that works for everyone.
