Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated March 29, 1944 reads, "During a recess, Charlie Chaplin reads the news about his trial in the Evening Herald and Express and seems to be amused by a series of character studies showing his expressions while sitting in the courtroom." Photographs 00106910-00106914 are four of the six photographs included in the character study.
