Description
Two photographs showing a baby carrier (Daim Nyias, Dlaim Hlaab Nyas) with batik wax design before and after being processed in an indigo dye bath. The photograph at left shows the pre-dyed baby carrier with batik design in wax. The photograph at right shows the piece (hung to dry on a line with a clothespin) after being dipped and dyed multiple times to achieve a dark indigo color. The designs feature several cross-hatching motifs, including x-shapes in the background, and hooks (tus khawb), intertwined to form x shapes which branch out to represent fences (laj kab). The prevalent cross-hatching imagery is connected to the fence motif, used to imbue a sense of protection and safety over babies. Rows of dots representing seeds (noob) border the central design. Strips of cloth will be appliquéd over the designs to create the final baby carrier. Handwritten inscriptions on the mat board surrounding the photographs read, (above photo at left:) "Baby carrier center / Design 3," (bottom left:) "Before dying," (bottom right:) "After dying and washing." Date derived from stamp on mat board verso. Image number inconsistent on verso. Notes on verso read: "Photo #19 Batik patter 3 [handwritten red ink, upper left verso]; HMong Baby Carrier #14 (Photo 14), Lewis Judy, *HMO.4061.00* Fall 2002 [printed label, upper left verso]; L.FC [handwritten black ink, lower left verso]; FEB 12 1987 [stamped red ink, lower left verso]" Numbering on verso inconsistent. Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Baby carrier and seed pillows (18 photos)
