Photograph was edited for publication purposes. Hidalgo and William Westbrook were suspects in a car under surveillance by Los Angeles Police detectives. The car was used in a robbery of a pharmacy in which the owner was killed. As the men attempted to flee, they became engaged in a gun fight with police detectives. Hidalgo and Westbrook were injured and booked at the prison ward in General Hospital. One officer was injured slightly. Police rounded up 11 other suspects involved in the murder. Photograph caption dated October 27, 1947 reads "Wounded in gun battle." Hidalgo, 17, is shown in a hospital bed with bandages on his head and covering one eye.
