Hose wagon in front of the Santa Cruz City fire station A hose wagon in front of the Santa Cruz City fire station on Church Street. Sometime between 1895 and 1906, the City expanded the fire department from one to two paid fire fighters. One man would be out watering streets to keep the dust down while the other one waited for a fire alarm. Harnesses for the horses were suspended from the ceiling of the fire station. At the sound of the bell, the harnesses automatically lowered, and the horses would be hitched up. Source of information: Jerry Ochoa
