(SIDE 1) BLAKE, L. J. 1154 Madison Street, Santa Clara, 296-1941. Mr. Blake was publisher of the Santa Clara Journal from 1927 through 1945, later operating a stationary store. July 3, 1974. City and university (1913). Paving of city. Cherry Carnival. “Riot” at SCU. History of the Journal. Major news stories: the Fallon-Monroe shoot-out on Franklin Street, explosion in a store. Public utilities. What “sold” newspapers in Santa Clara (Twenties, Thirties, Forties). Identification of city with the university, with the Mission: events at university, closing of Mission as a parish, prominent Jesuits. Fr. Ricard’s monthly weather forecasts in the Journal: accuracy, reputation among local people. Radio. Fr. Hubbard, the “Glacier Priest”. Montgomery’s aeroplane. Sale of the Journal and its subsequent history. The stationery store. The Depression: the Portuguese, a charity club, foreclosure sale notices in the Journal, WPA, creating a democratic town. The library (Thirties). Political campaigning: a vocal mayoral election (Pritchard versus Bacigalupi). The two SES’s: origins, aborted fight, the Portuguese fiesta. Fourth of July festival. Young Men’s Institute Columbus Day Parade. Santa Clara as a college town. Urban renewal: the business district in 1960, legal opposition to urban renewal, blight of old district, saloons in the area. Prohibition: its violation, enforcement. Business district in 1913. The Tannery in 1913, other factories. Business district in 1927. Small town atmosphere. Growth of city. Caskets from PM Mill. Dirksen became a professor at the university in 1938 and has been dean of the school of business since 1941. July 8, 1974. Business district (1938): its range of services, the local newspapers, agricultural-related industry. Property prices (1938). Local bank interest rates (1938). Effects of the Depression: local standard of living. The industrial boom (beginning in 1940): the Joshua Hendy plant in Sunnyvale, its effects on Santa Clara labor, the labor force in World War II. Population influx (post-World War II): old business district’s failure to respond to city’s growth, borough form of government proposal (Forties), development of shopping areas on outskirts of city, “gravitation” of shoppers to these markets. Composition of postwar labor force, labor relations, and influx of “dynamic” new people. Industrial recruitment campaign. Decay of old business district. Length—50 minutes.
