Half of a large redwood burl from a redwood tree off Redwood Highway, Sec. 25 T9N, R1W on Hammond land. Tree was felled by trespasser (Burl thief), but recovered by owner before removal. Photo taken at Stump House, Eureka. This piece weighed 4 tons, the other half 3-1/2 tons. Burl was 125' up, encircled the tree up to 8", where tree was about 24" in diameter. Butt diameter of tree was about 5'. The burl growth originated after trunk had developed rather than at pith. Trunk within burl straight-grained. Burl measured 7' high and about 8' in diameter.
