Description
Mayan women and children cook and eat inside a shelter in the refugee camp of Cuauhtémoc, Chiapas. Children sit on the floor and women carry babies on their backs while cooking. Refugees in the camps had no resources to deal with illness such as tubercolosis, dengue, malaria or malnutrition. In the days following the Guatemalan attack at the nearby refugee camp of El Chupadero on April 30, 1984, one of the most violent assaults of this kind that left seven refugees dead, refugees from the camp of Cuauhtémoc fled their settlement to avoid the same fate.
