Description
Handwritten letter found underneath the original redwood house that used to be located at 60 South 20th Street, San Jose. Believed to be addressed to Methodist Episcopal minister M. L. Vorhies, who arrived in San Jose to take charge of the Methodist society around 1883. Written in Albion, New York, February 1, 1884. Addressed "Dear Bro. Vorhies." Yours duly recd. I send you your receipt. I want a list of circuits -- Preachers, P.O. address and no of members and when you later collection for salaries? Can you inform me. I thank you for your glowing description of California. Frost flower [?] r. - ice 1/16 in thick. But see! [?] ice 12 to 15 in thick. Snow fall so far 3 ft 6 in. Drift 5 to 15 ft. No temptation that way. This is the garden. West N.Y. Let whoever will go go to Texas, California and Kamschatka. "Forever here my rest!" Albeit these winters are tremendous. I am sorry that your "harmless" articles were refused and the space filled up with Van Gaurdism. No Sectism. Old Church errors. But as it is a Private enterprise we submit - But say where do we [?] Christ is coming some night? Chapter & verse. From a boy I learned to read and believe -- now at 58 I read & believe the Bible as I would a letter from my Father. I never spiritualize anything to make my ends meet. Where is the fulfillment of the Restoration of the Jews [Jesus?]? Who agrees on the fulfillment of any promise yet unfulfilled? Only those already fulfilled are clearly understood -- a dozen theories are advanced showing that all our speculations are merely speculations. He will come when the time is fulfilled. My business is to be ready. I knew persons 42 years ago waiting they are dead - I hope to one who shall enter in -- calculate to go through with the redeemed & ransomed.
