The area in the foreground is densely packed with commercial buildings and many of which boasts Greek or Italian-style architecture. A street can be seen at left running into the left background. Trees are sparsely scattered throughout the city, and what appears to be a river can be seen across the background. A tall building can be seen beyond the river at right on top of a hill. Legible signs include: "St. Charles Hotel", "[Califo]rnia [...]lance Co.", "wholesale grocers", "books & stationery", "London Clothing Co.", "the Queer shoe store", "[carriage?] manufactory", "agg[ric]ultural implements", "studeba[...]".
