Description
Detailed, close-up view of the centerpiece for a HMong baby carrier (Daim Nyias, Dlaim Hlaab Nyas). The design, drawn in wax on blue-colored fabric, consists of cross-hatching motifs including x-shaped designs in the background, and hook (tus khawb) shapes representing cucumber flowers (paj dib) and fences (laj kab). The prevalent cross-hatching design is connected to the fence motif which is used to imbue a sense of protection and safety over the baby. Several rows of dots representing seeds (noob) create a border (ntug) around the central design. Handwritten inscription on mat board beneath photograph reads, "Baby carrier center / Design 4."
Date derived from stamp on mat board vero. Image numbering inconsistent on verso.
Notes on verso read: "HMong Baby Carrier #6 (Photo 6), Lewis Judy, *HMO.4053.00* Fall 2002 [printed label, upper left verso]; L.F.C. [handwritten black ink, upper right verso]; FEB 12 1987 [stamped red ink, upper right verso]"
Numbering on verso inconsistent. Original title from SEACRC: HMong: Baby carrier and seed pillows (18 photos)
