L.A. artist Peter Shire shows he has a great sense of humor. In this photograph he is seen walking out of a building, wearing a striped shirt, tan pants, with keys dangling from his belt; he is holding a briefcase, and sporting a clown half-wig and glasses. Apart from not taking himself too seriously, Shire is known for his revolutionary, sculptural, geometric interpretation of the traditional teapot, using sun-bleached pastel glazes, uncanny angles, and a jumbled collage of parts. Although he has ventured into architecture, furniture, fashion and painting, Shire keeps returning to ceramics. His paintings are done on slabs of clay in ceramic glazes, focusing exclusively on his life in Echo Park; he has made over 500 of these painted tiles. In addition to this work, Shire has done various commissions for public places and private buildings throughout Los Angeles as well as other cities, states, and countries. Solo exhibitions have appeared in places like Las Vegas, Seattle, Hawaii, Chicago, Washington D.C., Italy; and museum exhibitions have appeared in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and as far as Israel, Japan, London, Germany.
