CAPI was formed in 1987 in San Jose by five founding members, Christopher Street West, Long Beach, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose, as the California Association of Pride, Inc. In 1996, the association was renamed as the Consolidated Association of Pride, Inc. to better reflect its membership, which had grown from its original California based committees to include members in several nearby states and Mexico - totaling 37 in 2008.
