Description
Home of Dr. James M. and Eloise Jones Dawson, at the corner of the Alameda and Polhemus Street (later Taylor Street), San Jose. Dr. and Mrs. Dawson and their son Thomas B. Dawson started the first canning operation in San Jose in their home's backyard in 1871. Their first pack was 300 cases of peaches, apricots, pears and plums In 1875, Dr. Dawson and T. B. Dawson incorporated the San Jose Fruit Packing Company. The SJFPC joined the California Fruit Canners Association in 1899, which went on to be a founding partner of the California Packing Corporation [Calpak] in 1916. Calpak sold its products under a number of proprietary and distributive labels, including their premium brand, Del Monte. In June 1967, the company name was officially changed to the Del Monte Corporation.
