Description
Photograph of the painting "Ruth and Naiomi" by Calderon, ca.1886. A man and a woman embrace to the left in what appears to be the North American desert, a large cactus visible in the background. The man wears the robes of a Sikh, much like the second person to the right, who appears to be carrying luggage for the woman and whose gender is indeterminate. Desert hills riddled with palm trees fill the background. Picture file card reads: "r.a. 1833-1898" as well as attributing the following quote to C.C. Pierce, "This picture of Ruth and Naomi was exhibited at Burlington House in 1886, was purchased the same year for the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. It illustrates of course the first book of Ruth. Philip Hermogene Calderon was born at poitiers in 1883, a descendent of Don Pedro Calderon de la Barca. His father came to Kings College as Professor of Spanish Literature so Philip had all the advantages of art training in London and Paris".
