Description
Photograph of the America's Great White Fleet passing the San Pedro breakwater to enter Los Angeles Harbor, Los Angeles, ca.1908. Beach houses are visible scattered along the side of a winding road lined by utility poles, while the United States Atlantic Battle Fleet, nicknamed the Great White Fleet, steams across the harbor in formation. The breakwater is visible to the right, in front of some wooden steps built as a way to climb the dunes. The fleet, which debuted on the world stage during the Spanish-American War was one of the markings of President Theodore Roosevelt's "Big Stick" diplomacy.
