Description
This 1928 photograph provides a view of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and the Hotel Senator from the California State Capitol building’s dome. Nestled between the hotel and church is the Weinstock, Lubin and Company department store. A balloon holds aloft a sign advertising the “Hotel Senator Coffee Shop.” The Cathedral was finished in 1889 and the Renaissance-style Senator was opened in 1924 for $2 million which, by Central Valley standards, was completely unprecedented for a hotel. Its construction was seen by many to be a symbol of economic and architectural progress in the Capital area. To the left of the photograph, the Elks Building tries to peek around the main steeple of the Cathedral.
