Baker came to California during Gold Rush, mining briefly, and then engaged in mercantile pursuits in San Francisco and Sacramento and throughout the gold fields. Settled in Sacramento in 1850's, moving to San Francisco around 1862. Worked as artiist, art teacher, and general lithographer.
