Description
Featured on page 71 of the book, "Santa Clara Valley: Images of the Past" (San Jose Historical Museum Association, 1977), with the following text: In times of disaster human reaction is usually in the extreme. To protect the many against the few, Mayor G. D. Worswick ordered a 7 p.m. curfew and, to enforce order, the local militia, Company B, was called to active duty. They were bivouacked in St. James Park. Additional companies were sent in from Livermore and Oakland. The men protected the burned area downtown and prevented the destroyed buildings from being looted. A vigilante committee offered to help by hanging any looter caught in the act. Soon most inventories were safely carried away or stored. Little was left for the militia to do, but they maintained their military demeanor until dismissed. Every morning at 10:00 crowds gathered to watch the daily drill and inspection, which was carried out in strict military style.
