Shades of L.A. is an archive of photographs representing the contemporary and historic diversity of families in Los Angeles. Images were chosen from family albums and include daily life, social organizations, work, personal and holiday celebrations, and migration and immigration activities. Title supplied by cataloger.; Image is a reproduction. Ahmet Arslancan is from Iskilip, a province of Corum, Turkey. He is the son of Sukru and Hacer Arslancan. He attended Rochester University in New York. Judy was adopted by Audra Flaherty. Ahmet and Judy Flaherty met in graduate school and were married in Rochester, N.Y. on November 29, 1985. They have two daughters, Keri Yasemin and Keli Aylin Arslancan. In Turkish culture hand kissing is a form of deep respect often shown to elders, an act rooted in Ottoman tradition on special occasions. In this photo it is the last day of school and the children are lined up in front of their elementary school and they are kissing the hands of their teachers as they leave. It is a tradition thanking the teachers for a year of education.
