Bust-length portrait.
Born Margaret McDonald to John McDonald (both parents from Ireland) in New York, 1831. Married James Russel Deane in New York; came to California in 1851 via Panama. Worked as teacher in public schools in San Francisco and in various philanthropic projects. Appointed to State Board of Lady Managers for the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Died in 1910.
