Between 1942 and 1945 it offered food, dancing and entertainment for servicemen.; Mary Pickford was a Canadian-born silent film actress, famously known as "America's sweetheart," co-founder of American Artists film studio, and one of the original founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Buddy Rogers was an actor and a jazz musician. Photograph caption dated April 10, 1943 reads "Mrs. Bror Dahlberg, center, of New York, wife of the famed industrialist, is welcomed to the Hollywood Canteen by Lieut. and Mrs. Charles 'Buddy' Rogers (Mary Pickford). Mrs. Dahlberg plans to make her permanent residence here."
