Description
In 1956, 12-year-old Jim Berger, whose dad was building himself a house in San Anselmo designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, wrote to Wright asking for plans for a compatible doghouse for his black lab named Eddie.
Wright provided plans the next year, but building it from scraps from the main house was delayed because the main house was under construction for many years. When Jim joined the army at 19, his dad and brother Eric finally built the doghouse. But Eddie refused to use in it, preferring to sleep in the warmth next to the main house, so in 1970, Jim’s mom sent the unused doghouse to the dump.
In 2010, Jim and his brother built a new doghouse, from the original plans, for a documentary film called Romanza. However, it had one flaw common to many of Wright’s buildings, including the Marin County Civic Center: The roof leaked.
