"European and native staffs, Blantyre Hospital. Europeans - Nurse Muir, Dr. Wilfred McFarlane, Sister Drayton" - "Nyasaland [Malawi]". Group portrait of the staff of Blantyre Hospital. The three European members of staff sit in the middle whilst the indigenous men and women, make up the majority of the staff. The group stands in front of a doorway of a brick building, possibly the hospital. This photograph is one of several taken during Miss Muir's time serving in Southern Nyasaland where she gave medical support throughout the region. ❧ Blantyre Mission was established in 1876 by Henry Henderson (1843-1891) and was named after the birth place of David Livingstone, in South Lanarkshire, and is famous for the ornate church built by Clement Scott. The Blantyre mission also had an excellent reputation for its medical provision. ❧ This image belongs to an album of photographs collected by Dr. Stevenson and includes images from India, China and Africa.
