British jet planes: 1. How jet engines work. In its simplest form the jet engine works roughly as follows: At the front end is a rotary air compressor by which air is sucked in, compressed, and forced into a series of combustion chambers. At the same time kerosene is sprayed into the combustion chambers, where the air and kerosene vapours burn continuously. The resulting gases escape rearwards, on their way rotating the turbine, which by means of a shaft drives the air compressor
