Description
Booker and Carrie McAdoo migrated to California from Arkansas in September 1899. Booker, who worked as a bath house attendant in a masseuse parlor in Arkansas, had contracted tuberculosis and his doctors recommended the move to California because of the favorable climate. After spending about six months in Riverside, the family moved to Pasadena where they opened a restaurant. Eventually, Booker passed away and in 1909, Carrie opened a grocery store which was located at at 679 South Fair Oaks Avenue.
