This is a photograph of Fr. Kiernan working in the dispensary at Kongmoon. He holds the hand of a young patient and one can see shelves with medicines in the background. Born in New York, Fr. Kiernan came to Maryknoll in 1921 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1924. In 1927 he was assigned to Maryknoll's new mission in Wuchow, South China. He served as rector of Pingnam mission for two years. While in Wuchow mission he built a church that won international attention for its fine architectural style and was written up in the pages of Liturgical Arts Magazine. He served as group superior of Maryknollers in Wuchow and taught for two years in the Minor Seminary in Kongmoon. He also served the Society in the capacity of Treasurer General. He spent many years in mission in Hawaii. In his later years he served in various capacities in the United States.
