Description
Photograph of a view of the "Yellowjacket Mine" in Virginia City, Nevada, ca.1930. In the foreground on the left a hillside spotted with weeds leads to a small dirt trail and a thin mining track can be seen below. The track rides along the foot of a dirt hill in the center where a second track rides on a skeletal wooden structure. The tracks lead into the earth as well as to the factories and buildings that make up the mining site in the background. Amongst the buildings on the right piles of supplies can be seen on the foot of the hillside above. Picture file card reads "The 'Yellowjacket Mine' -- rated as one of the world's best producers. On April 7, 1869 this mine caught on fire with a loss of 45 lives. Parts of it were sealed up for three years before the fire was out".
